I was astounded to learn from my best friends (one from Colombia and one from Brazil) that most of the world is taught that there are five continents. Here in the U.S., the educational system has chosen to teach that there are seven continents, choosing to view North America as a separate continent rather than a sub-continent and doing the same thing with Australia and Antarctica.

An interesting lesson in cultural education.

back in the good ol' days it was one island and one opposite continent. then the War of Penguin Aggression drove out the people of Atlantis and made the ocean levels rise. it's an interesting theory that actually has some scientific backing. I wouldn't be surprised if we someday found ruins "down" there... [link]

Well, in school we were taught that there were 7 continents, too, but as the number is subject to the criteria of a certain definition, any value between 4 and 7 appears to be reasonable. ;)
