On warm or cool evenings, we gather on the porch, drink coffee, and talk about anything. Some of us sit in the rocking chairs, some on the steps of the porch, some with shoes on and some barefoot. Yes, it may represent a stereotypical Appalachian scene, but the porch has become an important place for family bonding.

:laughing: At least it used to be the American thing. Nowadays, few people have the time. The only way we are able to do it is that when we all gather at my parents' house, we're on vacation. :D

:D Perhaps the weather here is a bit less inclement? The "veranda" is a fine old southern tradition, but even the poor folks like my ancestors had porches, mostly because the houses got too hot during the days in warm weather, so the only option was to get out on the porch where one might pick up a stray breeze.
